Woking is a growing town in the West of Surrey, England, and has a population of around 90,000 occupants. The town’s shopping centre is one of the best in the county. The Peacocks Centre alone contains many major stores, a theatre and a multi screen cinema. Other local amenities include Woking Park, indoor swimming pools and the leisure centre. The area also benefits from some of the best golf courses around, for example Hoebridge in Old Woking. Tennis lovers will enjoy the lawn tennis club at Hook Heath or David Lloyd in nearby Kingfield. Woking has a diverse range of sports clubs and facilities catering for all sporting lifestyles.

Some history - Woking was formed around the railway station built there over 150 years ago to act as a junction between trains to the South Coast and the necropolis railway to Brookwood Cemetery. The Cemetery was developed by then London Necropolis Company as an overflow burial ground for London’s dead. Later Woking became home to the first Crematorium in the UK (St Johns) and the first Mosque in the UK (on Oriental Road).

Woking is famous for its football club Woking FC. In recent years the club has been successful in the FA Cup being drawn against much bigger profile clubs like West Brom. and Everton! With all the media hype and coverage, these fixtures put Woking (at least for a short period) well and truly on the map. The club has had quieter times more recently; however, the team is still trying to win promotion from the Conference.

The glamorous world of F1 racing is certainly no stranger to Woking. McLaren Formula 1 Team was born in Woking thanks to Managing Director Ron Denis. The McLaren Group are based at their recently constructed state of the art head quarters just outside Woking, which was unveiled by The Queen in 2004. Emerson Fittipaldi, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and the flying Finn Mika Hakkinen are some of the names who have driven for the Woking team.

More name dropping – The famous authors and playright George Bernard Shaw and H G Wells both called Maybury, Woking, home. H G Wells is well known in Woking for books such as ’The War of the Worlds’ – this book refers to Martians landing at nearby Horsell Common, 830 acres of commonland.

The Basingstoke Canal passes through Woking. A good time to visit these waters is on Spring Bank Holiday when the canal celebrates in festival style.

Over the past decade Woking has seen the opening of many new cafés, bars, bistros, restaurants and hotels. This constant growth and change has helped Woking become a much more vibrant and truly cosmopolitan town, attracting people from all over the world. Woking’s communication links are second to none; the motorway network (A3, M3 & M25) means London Heathrow & Gatwick airports are easily accessible. And trains from Woking mainline railway station take less than 30 minutes to reach London/Waterloo.
